Con el término harén, que proviene del árabe haram, ‘vedado’ o ‘prohibido’ -aunque en un principio, esta palabra quería también decir ‘sagrado’-, se designa en el mundo musulmán al departamento de la casa donde viven recluidas las mujeres, o también al conjunto de las mujeres que viven bajo dependencia de un jefe de familia. El harén es una institución común a todos los pueblos orientales en los que reina la poligamia; sin embargo, donde esta institución ha tenido su mayor grado de desarrollo fue entre los musulmanes. El árabe tenía, ya desde la más remota antigüedad, el derecho de contraer enlace con tantas mujeres legítimas cuantas pudiese mantener, así como de poseer cuantas esclavas y concubinas quisiese; por lo cual puede afirmarse que existía entre los árabes, antes de la aparición de Mahoma, un cierto tipo de harén, aunque fue el profeta quien dio carta de naturaleza a esta institución.

Uno de los versículos más citados del Corán dice: “Cásate con tantas mujeres como te parezca: dos, tres o cuatro… pero si temes no poder cumplir con ellas, toma una sola esposa”. Esto se ha interpretado como una autorización de la poliginia o como una limitación de la misma a un máximo de cuatro esposas, pero también se ha esgrimido en apoyo de la monogamia, ya que parece significar que ningún hombre, excepto Mahoma, puede hacer justicia a más de una mujer. Sea como fuere, el caso es que la poligamia es una práctica extendida entre los musulmanes que, aunque restringe la libertad de la mujer y coloca a ésta en un nivel inferior, cuenta aun en nuestros días con numerosos adeptos, y que justifica plenamente la existencia del harén. En el harén, la mujer es la dueña absoluta. Tiene la administración y el gobierno del mismo y en él hace su vida: allí come, bebe, juega, fuma, recibe a sus amigas, canta y baila y hace cantar y bailar a sus esclavas; hace, en fin, cuanto le place, excepto recibir las visitas de otros hombres que no sean sus parientes y, aun así, sólo de los más próximos. Esto sucede en las clases acomodadas de la sociedad musulmana. En las clases más humildes, la mujer es su propia sierva, así como de su esposo, y permanece recluida en su casa, atenta a los cuidados domésticos. La mujer del harén era un misterio; su belleza, ingenio y encanto eran tema de infinitas especulaciones. Hacia el siglo VIII, los harenes habían inspirado un nuevo tipo de poesía, en la que la inaccesibilidad de la amada era una faceta más de su imaginada perfección. Los poetas de la época, como Yamil, se recreaban en el sometimiento del amante a la amada, aunque esto les hiciera morir poco a poco “llorando por el amor de su asesina”. Este casto deseo dio lugar al concepto de amor “puro”, y es muy posible que influyera en los trovadores europeos.
